Shillong, May 25: The East Khasi Hills (EKH) boys and South West Khasi Hills (SWKH) girls won the respective titles of the Chief Minister’s State Level U-12 Football Tournament in the finals at the JN Stadium here today.
Both sets of victors won their matches with a 1-0 scoreline.
In the first game SWKH beat the EKH girls’ team with the lone goal scored by Daiahunlang Syiemiong in the 30th minute. This was her fifth goal of the state-level tournament and proved absolutely vital.
Although disappointing for the EKH girls to lose, the district’s boys went one better by beating Ri-Bhoi; in the 14th minute Wanraplang Kharumnuid weaved his way into the box to score the only goal (his sixth of the competition) of what was an engaging contest.
Sports & Youth Affairs Director Matsiewdor War Nongbri was the chief guest on the occasion. She and Sports & Youth Affairs Deputy Director JR Marak distributed the medals and trophies to the champions and runners-up.
In her speech, War Nongbri said that the children could become “champions, either as a team or individually, in sport or other areas of life”.
