Shillong, Aug 14: Nitendra Singh Rawat, an Indian long distance runner who has represented the country at the Rio Olympics in 2016, won the men’s event of the 8th Shillong Run, which was organised by the Agency for Sustainable Development Initiatives of the KJP Synod Sepngi here on Saturday.
In second place were Synshar Wahlang of Mawkyrwat, while Kresstarjune Pathaw of Nongstoin finished third in the men’s event of the 10km race.
In the women’s division, Pynhun Shullet of Saphai took first place, followed by sisters Dateikynmaw Marwein and Bandasharai Marwein of Mawlangwir.
In the junior boys’ division, Dabir Dkhar of Jowai finished first, Hepstarly Lyngkhoi of Mawkyrwat second and Dasaman Kyndait of Jowai third. In the girls’ category Aidaris Lyngkhoi took first place, followed by Lesmimery Lyngkhoi and Teilyntishisha Ramsiej of Mawkyrwat.
The theme of the eighth edition was ‘Run with Different Abilities’ with the aim of mainstreaming people with disabilities. As such, there was also a running category for those with disabilities.
In the men’s division Denisius Manih of Mawhati took first place, followed by Hubert Paliar of Nongstoin and Shanbormi Suchiang of Thadmuthlong. In the women’s division Maidensoben Lyngkhoi of Marshillong, Wandashisha Lyngkhoi of Nongspung and Semerry Lyngdoh of Mawkyrwat took the top three places.
In the children’s divisions, Korbar Kjar of Thadmuthlong, Timothi Lamo of Jowai and Wanaijingkme Tynsem of Pynursla were the top three among the boys, while Rebecca Khongstid of Pynursla and Latika Khongwir of Byrnihat were the top two among the girls.
The oldest runner was Rev WC Khongwir at 62 years of age, while the youngest was seven-year-old Bondexster Syiemlieh.
The race was organised to raise funds for three projects of the KJP Synod, namely the Rev Amirkha School for the Disabled, the Mairang Vidyajyoti Secondary School and the Community Based Rehabilitation Programme.
Mohendro Rapsang MLA was the chief guest and flagged off the race and distributed the prizes to the winners. PS Kharkongor, Secretary to the Governor’s Secretariat, was the guest of honour.
