Shillong, Oct 28: The Meghalaya contingent that took part in the 1st North East Olympic Games in Imphal will return home with 38 medals – three gold, seven silver and 28 bronze – according to the state officials accompanying the teams.
There’s a slight difference in the silver and bronze medal tally on the official Games’ website, however, which shows Meghalaya with eight silver and 29 bronze.
Apart from Marso Kyndait, who won gold on Friday in the men’s 1,500m race, two other Meghalayans bagged gold from the Games – Tanushree Dasgupta in women’s table tennis singles and Jitendra Shah in men’s boxing 75-81kg – both of which happened today.
However, despite these successes, Meghalaya’s overall haul is only enough to put them sixth in the medals table, which means that there are plenty of areas where the state can improve on.
Both the men’s and women’s football teams played their third-place matches today. The women lost to Sikkim, while the men beat Arunchal Pradesh for bronze.
Meanwhile, Medarisha Klein also took bronze in women’s high jump.
