Shillong, Feb 21: Meghalaya had a rough day on the cricket field today as their U-19 women’s, senior women’s and senior men’s teams all lost their respective matches today.
The closest result came in Meghalaya’s first Syed Mushtaq Ali match in Surat, Gujarat, where the state lost by just 13 runs to hosts Gujarat in Group B of the men’s T20 tournament.
Meghalaya chose to field after winning the toss and Gujarat made 146/8 in 20 overs. Abhay Negi claimed 3/30 in four overs, while Gurinder Singh bagged 2/10 in four very economical overs. The other wicket-taker was Akash Kumar (1/31), who has been promoted to the senior team from the junior ranks.
In the chase Punit Bisht smashed 56 from 34 balls, but while Swarajeet Das (23) and Negi (18) got starts, none of the other batsmen really got going and Meghalaya were restricted to 133/8 in their 20 overs. Meghalaya will play their next match against Himachal Pradesh at the same venue tomorrow.
Meanwhile, in Mumbai, Andhra Pradesh beat Meghalaya by 101 runs in Group A of the Senior Women’s T20 League today. After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Andhra made 125/3 in 20 overs to which Meghalaya could only respond with 24 all out in 16.3 overs. This was Meghalaya’s second match of the competition; yesterday they had lost to Himachal Pradesh by seven wickets and on Saturday they’ll be up against Delhi.
Meanwhile, in Dehradun, hosts Uttarakhand were nine-wicket winners over Meghalaya in the U-19 Women’s One Day League today. Put in to bat first Meghalaya were all out for 57 in 41.1 overs, which Uttarakhand chased down for the loss of just one wicket in 12.5 overs. Sikkim will be Meghalaya’s next opponents on Monday.
Finally, Bihar defeated Meghalaya by 124 runs in their U-23 Men’s One Day League plate group match yesterday in Bhubaneshwar. Meghalaya will take on Uttarakhand on Sunday in their next fixture.
