Shillong, May 3: Phonlang Khaii (pictured centre holding a football), who hails from a remote part of East Jaintia Hills, was the third-highest scorer in the zonal round of the Sub-Junior League (formerly U-13 Youth League) with 11 goals in eight matches.
Khaii scored two hat-tricks in his tally of 11 goals for Boca Juniors Football School in Group B of the Bangalore Zone.
According to the tournament’s official website Khaii made the starting line-up in each of Boca’s eight matches and scored hat-tricks against Raman Sports Academy (where his club won 4-0) and Jain Academy for Sporting Excellence (where Boca won 9-0).
The young striker was also the top scorer for his team, coming up with almost half of his side’s 24 goals.
Boca Juniors finished second in the five-team group, only behind Bengaluru FC.
Khaii was one of three players selected from Jaintia Hills by Boca Juniors Football School last year. He and Chabas Swer both hail from Suchen, while Daraphun Talang is from Thadbamon, West Jaintia Hills.
