Shillong, Apr 28: The new ‘containment measures’ that will be imposed in Greater Shillong, Jowai and Tura from 1st to 10th May include a prohibition of sports activities, the Meghalaya government announced today.
It was only two days ago that the East Khasi Hills district administration had prohibited sports events and training in contact and semi-contact sports in Greater Shillong until 1st May.
The ban on sports will now be extended until 10th May in Greater Shillong, with Tura and Jowai joining in the restrictions for the first 10 days of next month.
The Shillong area has been the worst affected by the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic that is hitting the state hard and there are fears that the situation could worsen in Tura and Jowai as well.
For the purposes of this suspension, Greater Shillong includes the whole Municipal area, the whole Cantonment area, all areas under Mawlai Community and Rural Development Block (including census towns), Mawpat C&RD Block (including census towns), Mylliem C&RD Block from Umshyrpi Bridge to 7th Mile and Upper Shillong (including Madanrting, Mawblei, Laitkor, Nongkseh, Umlyngka and Lawsohtun).
