Shillong, Dec 18: Nongrah won the final of the Shillong Sports Association’s Third Division 2021 by defeating Mawtawar 1-0 at the JN Stadium here today.
John Marboh headed in the goal off a Kynsaibor Wankhar free-kick in the 46th minute for the winner. This was the defender’s first goal of the season.
Both sides had good chances, with Nongrah striking the woodwork at the end of the first half, while Mawtawar thought they had an equaliser in the second half but the assistant referee ruled that the ball had not crossed the goal line.
Both teams emerged out of Group A. In fact, they couldn’t be separated after drawing 1-1, with the same points, goal difference, goals scored and goals against in the group stage.
As champions, Nongrah earned themselves a trophy and Rs 40,000, while Mawtawar take home Rs 20,000. Both sides, by virtue of being the top two in the division, will be bumped up to next season’s Second Division.
