Shillong, Nov 2: Meghalaya suffered a second defeat in the men’s football event of the 37th National Games in Goa today morning, losing to Maharashtra 2-1 in Group B.

This was the same scoreline that Meghalaya had to bear in their defeat to Manipur two days ago.

A long ball saw Mandeep Singh beat three defenders and slot it past the goalkeeper on the edge of the box for the opening goal in the 13th minute.

An unmarked Advait Shinde then added a second in the 35th minute for Maharashtra to go into the break leading 2-0.

Hungry for a comeback, Donlad Diengdoh (60′) gave Meghalaya some hope after a long ball was flicked by a team mate towards him in the box and he nailed the high ball into the net on the hour mark.

However, that was as far as Meghalaya could go. They had seven minutes of stoppage time added on but even then they couldn’t find the equaliser, although Mebankhraw Wahlang’s header off a corner kick did come agonisingly close.

Two defeats have killed off Meghalaya’s hopes of progressing to the knockout stage, though they still have one group game to go against Kerala on Saturday.
