Shillong, Nov 5: Lady Keane College defeated Sngap Syiem College of Mawkyrwat 3-1 on penalties in the final of the Inter College Women’s Football Tournament, organised by North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), here yesterday.
The tournament, which took place on the SAI Centre at NEHU, began on 30th October with nine participating teams.
Neither side had been able to score a goal in normal time, which pushed the match into a shootout.
Lady Keane’s run to the final saw them beat Nongstoin College 2-1 on the opening day, draw with St Anthony’s 0-0 on the second and take down NEHU Shillong 2-0 on the third. They then required penalties to get past Shillong College in the semifinals, winning 5-4 after full time ended 1-1.
Sngap Syiem, on the other hand, had won all four of their matches, beginning with a 1-0 result over Shillong College, a 5-0 steamrolling of Nabon Synod College before another 1-0 win against St Edmund’s. Their semifinal saw them put up against Nongstoin College and they won that contest 1-0 too.
The tournament ended with a presentation ceremony, where Prof K Debberma, Dean of the NEHU’s School of Social Science, was the chief guest and gave away the prizes to the winners. N Das, Assistant Director of PE & Sports as well as the tournament’s organising secretary, was also present during the ceremony.
