Shillong, Apr 5: Shillong Lajong FC will play their last home match of the I-League 2023-24 season on Saturday night at 7PM at First Ground, Polo, here.

The fixture is sure to be a tough one as the Reds will play against league leaders Mohammedan Sporting, who only need a point from their last two games to win the title and gain promotion to next season’s Indian Super League.

Lajong come into this match after having lost to Delhi FC in Ludhiana on 28th March. With Delhi also winning earlier today, Lajong have dropped to seventh in the standings with 31 points, 1 behind Delhi but the latter have played an extra game.

In the pre-match press conference held earlier today, Lajong head coach Bobby Lyngdoh Nongbet said that he is looking forward to the final home game tomorrow against the league leaders and hopes to finish in a positive manner.

SLFC have recorded eight wins, seven draws and seven defeats. Mohammedan, on the other hand, have only lost once, while also racking up 14 victories and seven draws.

Lajong will try and halt their opponents’ run to the trophy but will do so as much for themselves and the fans who have backed them to the hilt this season.

The Shillong side have only a faint hope of a Top 5 finish, though, something they had aimed for at the start of their comeback year. (Currently fifth place is occupied by Gokulam Kerala, who have 36 points and whose final two fixtures will be against bottom clubs NEROCA and TRAU.)
