Shillong, Nov 1: Mawtawar SC fought off a determined Umphyrnai SC for a 3-2 victory in the Shillong Sports Association’s First Division 2024 at First Ground, Polo, here today.
The two teams are having contrasting experiences this season, with Mawtawar fighting for top spot, while Umphyrnai are at the bottom of the standings.
You wouldn’t have thought that today, though, with Umphyrnai making things nervous for Mawtawar.
It all started well enough for Mawtawar with an early goal from Meban Kurkalang (4′). Rishan Mylliem Umlong doubled the lead in the 30th minute but Umphyrnai were able to claw one goal back before the break through Isharwell Mukhim (34′) four minutes later.
Then, in the second half, Easter S Ch Sangma (76′) equalised for Umphyrnai only for Fedrick Lyngdoh to reestablish Mawtawar’s lead with an 81st minute goal.
Victory pushed Mawtawar to the top of the standings with 10 points, one ahead of Malki SC.
