Shillong, Feb 7: NorthEast United FC announced tonight that Redeem Tlang has signed a contract extension with the club that will keep him with the Highlanders until 2027.

Tlang’s journey with NorthEast United began in the inaugural season of the Indian Super League in 2014 after being loaned by Shillong Lajong FC. Following spells with Lajong, FC Goa and Odisha FC, he returned to NEUFC in July 2023.

Tlang, who will turn 30 this month, has been a key component of Juan Pedro Benali’s squad, making 17 appearances in the 2023-24 season. This season, he has excelled in a new role as a right-back, further solidifying his place in the starting XI.

“I’m thrilled to extend my stay with NorthEast United FC. I believe in the club’s direction and the support from the coaching staff and management has been incredible. I’m confident we can achieve great things together, and I’m committed to giving my all to help the team reach its goals,” Redeem, who has more than 100 ISL caps, was quoted as saying in an NEUFC release.

Benali praised Redeem’s leadership both on and off the field, stating, “Redeem is a vital presence for us, and we’re delighted he’ll remain a part of the NorthEast United family. He began his ISL journey with NorthEast United FC and we hope he finishes his career here.

“Redeem can play in multiple positions and adds versatility to our team. Additionally, continuity in squad build-up is the key to our vision and Redeem fits the bill perfectly. It was a no-brainer that we wanted to extend his contract,” club CEO Mandar Tamhane added. “For us, playing the first-ever ISL game in Shillong, Redeem being a local boy, presented us with a perfect opportunity to announce his extension at the hands of his family.”

NEUFC orchestrated a special moment to announce Redeem’s extension. During the aforementioned match against Mumbai City FC tonight, in the 22nd minute (Redeem’s jersey number), the club unveiled placards reading “Redeem Stays 2027,” held by his family.

“This is a moment of immense joy for our family,” shared Emmon Tlang, Redeem’s mother. “We’ve come to the JLN Stadium to watch football for years and now to be part of this announcement is truly special.”
