Shillong, May 3: Two members of the Meghalaya Sport Climbing & Mountaineering Association have successfully completed their respective mountaineering courses in Darjeeling, MeSCMA informed yesterday.

Both Balawanhabor Rynjah and Keliostar Pdai will be awarded A grades, the highest grade possible, by the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute for their fantastic performance.

The pair took part in courses that ran from 1st to 28th April. Their participation was made possible through the Meghalaya Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs.

Balawanhabor, from Sankardev College, won first position in the sport climbing competition and, as part of height gaining training, he and the team of 65 trainees from the Advance Mountaineering Course reached Camp I of Mt Kabru Dome on the Sikkim-Nepal border.

On the other hand, Keliostar, a battalion constable of the 3rd MLP Battalion, along with 71 trainees climbed Mt Renok (16,500 feet) on the Sikkim-West Bengal border during the Basic Mountaineering Course.

The rigorous and transformative courses equipped trainees with essential skills in mountaineering, including physical training, yoga, rock climbing, ice climbing, jumar (a type of clamp used in mountaineering) climbing, trekking, ice craft, crevasse rescue, map reading, rope techniques and rappelling, MeSCMA said.
