Shillong, Sep 15: The 4th Meghalaya Open Table Tennis Cash Prize Tournament 2025 concluded in Laban here on Saturday.
The two-day event was organised by Laban SC’s Table Tennis Academy at the Laban SC Indoor Stadium. The tournament was open to players from Meghalaya and outside the state and the total prize purse was Rs 1.5 lakh.
Professional paddler Aadarsh Om Chhetri returned to Shillong and won two titles – the men’s singles and men’s doubles. Aadarsh, originally of Upper Shillong, lived in Meghalaya until Class 4 before moving away to further his table tennis dreams.
He was given a tough fight by Suranjit Dey in the men’s singles final, winning 4 games to 3. In the men’s doubles, Aadarsh partnered with Suranjit to beat Ayan Aziz and Parasmoni Dutta 3-0.
The tournament had categories for everyone – U-13 and U-15 (boys and girls) singles, men’s veterans singles and doubles, women’s singles and men’s singles and doubles.
The U-15 boys’ singles final was also close, with Abhishek Saikia come from 2-1 down to defeat Prekhyaneev Gogoi 3-2.
It was an even more impressive comeback in the men’s veterans doubles, where Santanu Ghosh and Gilbert Sohtun were trailing two games to zero before winning three in a row to take the title against Bijeet Chakraborty and Sandeep Bhuyan.
Prizes for Best Player in the four junior categories were also awarded at the closing ceremony. These went to Shriya Thapa (U-13 girls), Niyon Kashyap Das (U-13 boys), Akshita Roy (U-15 girls) and Prekhyaneev Gogoi (U-15 boys).
