Shillong, Aug 7: Today marks exactly one year since Neeraj Chopra won an historic gold medal in the men’s javelin event at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

To commemorate that success, the Athletics Federation of India has named 7th August as National Javelin Day.

Being a Sunday this year, the Meghalaya Athletics Association marked the occasion yesterday at the SAI Sports Centre here.

Around 100 athletes, boys and girls, took part in U-16 and 16-plus categories, Meghalaya Athletics Association Secretary Finely Pariat said in a release today. Prizes were distributed to the winners of the event. The chief guest was Gunin Changmai, the official in charge of the SAI complex.

Chopra became the first Asian athlete to win an Olympic gold medal in the men’s javelin and is the first track and field athlete to win a gold medal for India at the Olympics. He also won a silver at the recent World Athletics Championships but picked up an injury as a result and had to withdraw from the ongoing Commonwealth Games as a result.
