Shillong, Jun 14: Sawmer got their first points of their maiden U-18 Shillong Premier League here today with a 3-0 victory over Malki.
Bankyrshan L Mawphlang (1′), Rapborlang Marwein (34′) and Justerwell Tham (89′) were the goal scorers.
Both teams lost their opening fixtures 2-1 and were looking for a turnaround, but it was Sawmer that came out clearly on top.
Malki started slowly in defence, with Mawphlang tapping in a volley from a cross just seconds after the start of the game. What made it easy was that he was completely unmarked. Marwein then scored later on from the edge of the box with a sublime shot on target to double Sawmer’s lead.
The boys from Malki came close to scoring on a couple of occasions – they were denied by the crossbar in the first half and by a desperate goal-line clearance in the second. Their determined attacks, however, left them a little more open in the back and Tham swerved his way past the defenders and left-footed the ball into the top corner of the net in the 89th minute to put the contest well beyond any doubt. This was Tham’s second consecutive 89th minute goal; he had done the same thing in Sawmer’s 2-1 defeat to Shillong Lajong on Monday.
This also happens to be the first match of the 2018 tournament to see a club keep a clean sheet.
Yesterday Langsning and Rangdajied United played out a 1-1 draw.
Tomorrow Langsning and Nangkiew Irat will face off against each other at 3:30PM.
