Shillong, Jun 28: Malki scored their first goal in five matches but still came out behind Sawmer, losing 2-1 in the U-18 Shillong Premier League here today.
Bankyrshanlang L Mawphlang scored Sawmer’s opener in the 36th minute after a defensive lapse practically handed him the ball on a platter, which he slotted into the net from outside the box.
Then, more than 410 minutes since their last goal came against Nangkiew Irat in their opening game, Rajat Peter Lyngdoh took a free-kick from just inside Sawmer’s half; the ball was deep and should have been collected by the Sawmer goalkeeper, but the ball somehow burst through his gloves and went into the net in the 51st minute.
Sawmer, who had previously defeated Malki 3-0 in the first leg, responded by going all out for the win and Malki had to resist stoically, with goalie Frankly Surong pulling of a couple of great saves.
However, with the finish line almost in sight, Sawmer’s Rapborlang Marwein spotted an opportunity and curled in the ball over the top of Surong, who was slightly off his line, for the winner in the 78th minute.
Sawmer now have 10 points and are in provisional first place in a very tight field. Malki stay on zero points and are at the bottom of the table.
Tomorrow it’ll be Nangkiew Irat versus Shillong Lajong at 3:45PM.
