Shillong, Dec 30: Celebrated international martial arts practitioner Hameshaniah Suiam (seated right) was conferred with the U Kiang Nangbah Achievement Award in the sports category by the National People’s Party’s youth wing (ie the National People’s Youth Front) on the 158th death anniversary of Kiang Nangbah in Jowai today.
Earlier this year Suiam bagged a gold medal in point fighting at the Indian Open International Kickboxing Tournament in New Delhi. Suiam’s gold for India came in the -57kg senior men’s category.
Dauniwanchwa Phawa (seated centre) was also presented with the award in the same category. Phawa is most involved in futsal in the state.
The purpose of these awards is to “give due recognition and support to the people of eminence, whose call to serve their fellow human beings and society at large is not only commendable but is inspirational,” the NPP said in a press release.
Two other awards in the socio-cultural and fine arts categories were also given out to Kiang Nangbah Iasiat Khnam Memorial Society and Wanhi-i Challam respectively.
The function was attended by Jowai MLA Wailadmiki Shylla, Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council Chief Executive Member Thombor Shiwat, Jowai North MDC Bright Star Chyrmang, nominated MDC Octomewot Lamin and NPYF Working President Nickey Nongkhlaw.
