Shillong, Nov 3: Umiam Lake will be the site of a regatta from Thursday, with the arrival of the Rising Sun Water Fest 2022.
The maiden event will be held under the aegis of the Eastern Command headquarters, which has its aquatic node at the lake.
More than 150 participants from 22 clubs will be participating in rowing and sailing from all across the country.
The inauguration ceremony will start at 10am with Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma the chief guest. The opening ceremony would be bejeweled by performances by the Isha Som band, a Garo dance troupe and by regimental brass bands of the Indian Army.
The Indian Navy operational demonstration and display of prowess of the Special Parachute Regiment Forces with vital support from the Indian Air Force will also be a major attraction for the audience.
The regatta, organisers hope, will have a lasting impact and will create awareness and interest about sailing and rowing, with a view to encourage the youth to take up such water sports and thereby create an opportunity for the North East to become a centre of excellence in water sports events.
