Shillong, Jul 9: Five Meghalaya kickboxers won medals at the WAKO India National Seniors & Masters Kickboxing Championship, which was held recently in Jalandhar, Punjab.
Teimiki Sungoh and Sweety Kumari Thakur both won gold, Anjelin Iakai and Banisha Suiam both silver and Kynsaibor Wahlang bronze. The latter is from Mawkyrwat, while the others are from Shangpung.
The kickboxers took part under the banner of the Meghalaya State Kickboxing Association.
MSKA fighters have now won a total of 185 medals (70 gold, 47 silver, 68 bronze) at different events since August 2017, MSKA Working President Lorenzo Pearson Warjri said in a press release yesterday.
Sungoh won the gold in the full contact below 57kg male category, making him a two-time national champion. Thakur, meanwhile, took gold in the kick light event below 40kg female category.
Iakai claimed her silver in light contact below 51kg female and Suiam light contact below 55kg female.
Wahlang was making his maiden appearance at this championship and came away with a bronze in the full contact below 51kg male event.
The Meghalaya team was led by senior kickboxer Mordekai S Kharpuri as coach.
Shaiborlang Lyngdoh Mawphlang also featured as a referee and was one of the youngest adjudicators at the championship.
