Shillong, Aug 26: Mawkriah West defeated Madan SCC 4-3 on penalties after they were locked at 2-2 at the end of extra time in the second semifinal of the Shillong Sports Association’s Third Division 2025 at the SSA Stadium at First Ground, Polo, here today.
Maxwell Marak (14′) gave Madan SCC the lead only for Mawkriah West to equalise and then edge themselves in front through Sebius Kharkrang (35′) and Kerimore Marbaniang (64′). Medonbanshan Kurkalang then pulled off an equaliser for Madan SCC in the 78th minute.
Fifteen minutes of extra time failed to provide anymore goals and the match was then taken to penalties, where Mawkriah West prevailed.
A high ball into the box saw Mawkriah West goalkeeper Sunshine Kharmuti come off his line but he misjudged the ball slightly and palmed it for Maxwell to head in.
Around 20 minutes later Sebius was on the right flank and had a diagonal ball sent his way. He nipped in from well behind so the Madan SCC players weren’t expecting him and he was able to pounce on the ball and take a shot, which looked like it took a touch from the keeper before entering the net.
Before half time Madan SCC had a chance to reclaim the lead but the shot came off the bar and bounced down without crossing the goal line.
Mawkriah West then claimed the lead in the second half when, following a corner, a melee ensued and Kerrimore managed to get a touch on the ball to send it into the net.
Mawkriah West may have wanted to run down the clock but they were unable to do so after Medonbanshan saw Madan SCC go level with a goal from inside the box.
Phermanbha Lyngdoh almost gave Madan SCC the winner in stoppage time but his shot came off the woodwork and bounced back and hit Sunshine but without having enough momentum to cross the line.
Mawkriah West will thus meet Umlyngka (who beat Umrynjah in the first semifinal, also on penalties, yesterday) in the final, which is slated for 30th August. Victory means that Mawkriah West will also be promoted to next year’s Second Division.
