Shillong, Oct 23: The Meghalaya U-16 boys’ cricket team made a strong start to the Vijay Merchant Trophy with victory by an innings and 142 runs in their opening match at the Assam Valley School Ground in Tezpur, Assam.
Mizoram won the toss and chose to field first in the match that began on Sunday. Although no Meghalaya player managed to reach a half-century, there were enough contributions from several batsmen to get Meghalaya to 228 all out in 88.1 overs.
Prince Maurya top-scored with 45. Mrityunjay Bharali and Nirdesh Baisoya both contributed 34 each.
Mizoram were then bowled out for 52 in their first innings, with Baisoya taking 4/9 and Gavineal Marpna 4/11, and Meghalaya made Mizoram follow on.
However, Mizoram couldn’t put up a better fight in their second innings either and were all out for 34 on the second day. This time Baisoya ended with figures of 4/5 (match figures of 8/14) and Maurya 5/14.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya’s U-19 men’s team lost to Manipur by just 15 runs in their one-day match yesterday.
Manipur won the toss and chose to bat, making 236/6 in 50 overs. Aryan returned the best figures for Meghalaya – 2/24.
In the chase Hrithik Sharma made 85 and there were a couple of decent innings from Rayner Lyngdoh (32) and Biprodeep Dasgupta (37), but Meghalaya could only make 221/8 in their allotted overs.
