Shillong, Jan 21: Work on the long-awaited Meghalaya Sports Policy will be completed within 100 days, Sports & Youth Affairs Minister Banteidor Lyngdoh said on Monday.
Lyngdoh was speaking during a felicitation function for the athletes who won medals for Meghalaya at October’s North East Olympic Games.
“The sports policy will be completed in 100 days. On day one when I became minister I asked ‘Where is the sports policy?'” Lyngdoh said.
Meghalaya State Olympic President John Kharshiing had earlier also mentioned the policy in his speech.
“We are in discussions with the government on the sports policy. It’s in the final stages and in the process of being notified,” Kharshiing said.
There is plenty in the draft policy, which can be found in our report from last April.
Kharshiing, mindful of the young audience at the function, mentioned one proposed aspect of the policy, which is to award bonus marks to athletes who are pursuing educational qualifications.
“I am grateful to the Meghalaya government for sticking to the roadmap for the National Games,” Kharshiing, who had pushed so hard to bring the Games to the state, added.
