Shillong, Jun 17: A two-day event to mark Olympic Day will be organised by the Meghalaya State Olympic Association.
Tomorrow the MSOA will hold an inter-college sports quiz open to college students at U Soso Tham Auditorium from 10:30AM. East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Matsiewdor War Nongbri will be the chief guest.
Then, on Saturday, the MSOA will hold its second 10km Olympic Day Run and a ‘Run for Fun’ meant for the U-16s and senior citizens from 7AM. More than 200 participants have already registered for the race, with significant numbers of police and paramilitaries signing up. The winners will receive Rs 10,000.
The race will run on a route beginning at State Central Library, progressing through Ward’s Lake, Camel Back Road, Chief Secretary’s residence, Demseiniong, Rynjah, Pohkseh, Nongthymmai, Barik Point, Civil Hospital and ending at the library.
The ‘Run for Fun’, which is of less than 3km’s distance, will begin at State Central Library and head towards Khyndailad before looping back and ending at the library.
Olympic Day marks the birth of the International Olympic Association, which was founded on 23rd June 1894. The special day, however, only came to be celebrated as Olympic Day from 1948 onwards. As 23rd June this year falls on a Sunday, the MSOA is holding its races on Saturday.
