Shillong, Oct 16: Eugeneson Lyngdoh and the rest of the East Bengal team landed in Goa today ahead of the Indian Super League season.
East Bengal are the newest club in the ISL, having secured direct entry only at the end of last month.
It was widely reported that Lyngdoh had signed up to the Red & Golds months ago, but this was not confirmed, with sources expressing doubts about whether he would join a club whose future was still left in tremendous doubt as East Bengal had fallen out with major sponsors Quess and their participation, without a new backer, in the ISL was not guaranteed.
However, the Kolkata giants (who have inked a sponsorship deal with a cement company) secured a place in the top flight of Indian football and this paved the way for Lyngdoh to join the club. East Bengal, now the 11th team to join the league, are yet to formally announce their squad, however.
“All coaches, players, and support staff will follow strict Covid-19 protocols set by the Indian Super League and will enter their respective isolation periods on reaching the team hotel,” the club said in a statement yesterday.
