Shillong, Aug 22: In celebration of National Sports Day, which falls on 29th August, a series of events will be organised by the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs, sports associations, schools and Meghalaya State Olympic Association across the state.

The theme of this week revolves around sport’s power to transcend all differences and encourage people from all walks of life to engage in sport.

The celebration is a part of a larger initiative organised by the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. As part of the events, Meghalayans will be able to join in reciting the Fit India Pledge with their compatriots around the country.

State government departments will also participate in activities such as football, cycling, walkathons and basketball and will celebrate the week by reporting to work in activewear. The government will also encourage a Cycle/Walk to Work Day, which will be announced shortly.

Similar events will also be announced and organised by Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan and Sports Authority of India, organising various events encouraging participation amongst their members and the wider public.

The marquee events organised by the DSYA will be on 26th and 29th August in Shillong.

On 26th August, a Run for Fitness event will be hosted in Shillong. The 5km race will begin and end at First Ground in Polo, taking in Lumjingshai, Mawlai Mawroh and Golf Links. The run will begin at 6:30AM and registration can be completed at the office of the East Khasi Hills District Sports Officer in Polo.

Free t-shirts will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis, refreshments after the run will be provided to all the participants and 50 special gifts will be given to lucky runners.

29th August will see a short event with cash awards for participants and a cultural event – further details were not provided in the DSYA press release.

The day will culminate in an exhibition football match between civil servants and MLAs at Polo.
