Shillong, Jan 4: Football legend Augustine Kharkongor has begun an U-13 tournament in honour of his late mother, which got underway here yesterday.

Eight teams are participating in the inaugural edition of the tournament – Mawlai Grassroots Centre, PFR Academy, Umpling Kickers Academy and Shillong Soccer Scout are in Group A while DBSA, Young Age Academy, JK FC and Rangdajied United are in Group B.

The two top teams from each group will qualify for the semifinals and the final will be played on 8th January.

The eldest son of Josephine Kharkongor, Augustine Kharkongor said that the family decided to organise the tournament on the fourth death anniversary of his mother.

According to him, there are many football academies that have come up to nurture youth footballers but “sadly there are very few tournaments for the younger age groups to expose their talent. Real match exposure is different as compared to the matches that they play during their training,” he added.

The Kharkongor family intends to run this tournament every year from now on.
