Shillong, Jan 8: Sports & Youth Affairs Minister Shakliar Warjri today informed that he recently submitted a proposal to the Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports to organise the 39th National Games in Meghalaya in 2027, which would be five years after the original plan to hold them in 2022.
Meghalaya’s turn to host the mega multisports event had been delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic and by other states who were in line to hold the Games postpone their events.
In December, it was informed that discussions between the Meghalaya State Olympic Association, state government and Indian Olympic Association were ongoing regarding the possibility of holding the 39th Games in February-March 2027.
Today Warjri said that if Meghalaya is given the OK, it will be able to carry out all the pre-event work required and host the Games successfully.
“In terms of sports infrastructure, we are ready to host the National Games with several infrastructures that have come up across the districts,” the minister said.
Meanwhile, the state is readying to hold the 6th Meghalaya Games, which will begin on 20th January. This year Jowai will play host, with 29 disciplines taking place. Athletics, however, will be held in nearby Wahiajer and golf and swimming in Shillong. The Games will conclude on 25th January.
