Shillong, May 18: Garhwal United FC won the Indian Women’s League 2 title yesterday in Goa and they were able to claim the trophy and promotion to the next edition of the IWL’s first tier thanks to the performance of seven Meghalaya players in the squad over the course of the 2024-25 season.
Sanfida Nongrum was the captain of the club, which is based in Delhi, with the others from Meghalaya being Fragrancy Riwan, Ribansi Jamu, Bonifilia Shullai, Banrisha Wahlang, Ribahunshisha Kharshiing and Iaraplang Nongrum.
Garhwal United didn’t drop any points throughout the entire tournament, finishing with eight wins in as many games.
Sanfida started all eight games, while Ribansi was first choice goalkeeper in seven outings. Fragrancy was also named in the starting lineup in seven matches, while Ribahunshisha made three starts and four appearances as a substitute. Iaraplang was used as a substitute on six occasions, while Bonfilia made one start and came on as a sub six times. Banrisha, unfortunately, didn’t get any game time but provided support from the bench.
In the group stage, Garhwal United not only won all four matches but did it without conceding a single goal while pumping in 15 of their own.
The top two teams from each group qualified for the final round and here Garhwal were victorious throughout again versus each of their four opponents (one team withdrew before the final round began). Here they scored 13 goals and conceded just once to finish on top of the standings.
