Shillong, Mar 4: Meghalaya’s Tlanding Wahlang has been named in India’s team for the 2019 Trail World Championships.
Winner of India’s first international medal in ultrarunning, Ullas Narayana, will lead a team of five athletes to the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) Trail World Championships, to be held at Miranda Do Corvo, Portugal, on 8th June.
The Indian team for the World Championships comprises Kieren Dsouza, who became the first Indian to complete a 246km Spartathlon in 2016, Wahlang, Radhey Kumar and Rajasekar Rajendra as well as Narayana.
To be eligible, the Atheltics Federation of India (AFI) had set various standards which an athlete had to meet.
The performance of athletes who have been selected to represent India were based on evaluation of the individual athlete’s performance as per the race category specific listing awarded to them by the International Trail Running Association (ITRA).
In addition to meeting the race specific benchmark and qualifying period, as proof of fitness, athletes were required to have run an ultra race in a period up to 12 months before the championships. In the end, out of a total of 68 men and two women who had applied for the selection process. Five men met the criteria of race specific benchmark and proof of fitness.
