Shillong, Jul 29: Robert G Lyngdoh passed away today after a prolonged illness. He was 62.
Renowned for his role as Meghalaya’s Home Minister many years ago, it was during his time that militancy was all but crushed in Khasi-Jaintia Hills.
A writer, musician, artist and more, Lyngdoh was also heavily involved in sports administration in the state, having been a member of the Meghalaya State Olympic Association and Meghalaya Table Tennis Association.
Previously the MSOA Working President up until 2016, he resigned as MSOA Adviser in January this year but continued on as President of the MTTA.
In the latter role he was present at the opening ceremony of the 83rd Senior National Table Tennis Championship, which was held in Shillong in April but did not attend on the following days, including even the final, as rumours surfaced that he was unwell.
Lyngdoh spent time in an intensive care unit (ICU) in hospital earlier this month but his condition improved enough for him to be allowed to go home, where he passed away this morning.
The Shillong Sports Association paid tribute to Lyngdoh on social media, describing him as a “towering figure of Meghalaya history” and adding that he will be missed by the entire sports community of the state.
The MSOA’s executive council held an emergent meeting today and expressed its sincere condolences on the passing of its former Working President. A minute’s silence was also observed as a mark of respect.
The MSOA remembered Lyngdoh’s commitment in implementing the state’s Sports Policy and Youth Policy.
“He will be remembered for his immense service to the people of the state in the field of sports and games,” MSOA General Secretary Finely Pariat said in a release. The association also conveyed its heartfelt condolences to all of Lyngdoh’s family members.
