Shillong, Feb 14: Shillong Lajong FC won their last group match of the All India Football Federation’s U-17 Youth League 4-1 against Aizawl FC at First Ground, Polo, today.
That means that Lajong end Group C in second place with 14 points from eight matches. This marks an impressive turnaround as they were rock bottom during the first leg of matches.
Today, Banlamkupar Rynjah (28′), Ricky Kharkongor (50′, 55′), Riborlang Lyngdoh Lyngkhoi (83′) scored for Lajong and Christopher Zaithantluanga (81′) for Aizawl.
Lajong had also beaten Aizawl in the first leg. The two were on 11 points before this game but SLFC have come through on top. Leading the pack, however, are Manipur’s Football 4 Change Academy, who have 16 points. They lost 2-1 to NorthEast United FC today but they had already guaranteed themselves first place. NEUFC moved up one spot to third place with 12 points. Bottom place has gone to Harisinga Town Club of Assam (3 points).
These were also the last group matches in the Youth League. There are 10 groups in all with 54 participating teams across the country.
What happens in the next round is unknown to TSR. Some groups had four teams, others five and a few six, so we’ll wait to see how many progress from the group stage.
