Shillong, May 3: Nativity Higher Secondary School cemented their position as the best school for athletics in South West Khasi Hills with the title of Overall Team Champions at the District Level Inter-School Athletic Meet 2024, which concluded in Mawlangwir yesterday.
Nativity HSS were also Team Champions last year and the year before that.
Septuagenarian marathon runner Kmoin Wahlang (pictured right) was the chief guest at the closing ceremony of the three-day meet yesterday at the Rowell Lyngdoh Stadium. Altogether, 23 schools and 584 athletes took part.
Wahlang, who recently won the World 10K Bangalore Marathon in the 70-plus age category, urged the young athletes to embrace courage and diligence in both their academic and athletic pursuits. Furthermore, she highlighted the significance of maintaining physical activity on a daily basis for overall fitness and health.
Nativity HSS were the champions in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions, with Presbyterian Higher Secondary School the boys’ runners-up and Maharam Government Higher Secondary School the girls’ runners-up.
Individual awards for best athletes were also distributed at the closing ceremony. In the U-14 boys’ category, the awarded was presented to to Robertson Marwein of Nativity HSS, while Lanosha K Syiemiong of JKMP HSS earned the title in the U-14 girls’ category. Rickyshan Iawphniaw of Mawkyrwat Presbyterian Secondary School was the Best Athlete in the U-16 boys’ division, with Ibandariakor Nongsiej of Nativity HSS taking the corresponding award in the U-16 girls’ division.
In the U-18 age category, Aiborlang Kharjahrin of Tenset SS and Badaphun Nongrem of Nativity HSS bagged the awards in the boys’ and girls’ divisions respectively.
Tenset also claimed victory in the march past, with Little Star HSS second and Rising SS third.
The winners of this year’s athletic meet will be selected to represent the district at the State Level Inter-School Athletic Meet 2024 to be held in Shillong later this month.
Others who were present at the event yesterday were Additional Superintendent of Police B Kharjana, District Sports Officer Damang Syngkon and noted runners Binningstar Lyngkhoi and Swonding Mawlong, among others.
