Shillong, Mar 16: As part of the commemorations of Meghalaya’s 50th year of statehood next year, the Meghalaya government aims to bring in the North East Sports Festival and National Table Tennis Championships, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said in the Assembly yesterday.
Last month the Table Tennis Federation of India had had made a brief announcement that Shillong will host the next edition of the table tennis nationals. The city has already had experience of hosting major table tennis events, such as the South Asian Games in 2016 and South Asian Federation Junior Table Tennis Championship in 2012. Both events took place at the JN Indoor Stadium, Polo.
TSR doesn’t know much about the North East Sports Festival, though an event going by that name had begun in the 1980s.
Meanwhile, the CM also said that the PA Sangma Stadium in Tura will be one of the biggest dedicated football stadiums in the region and will change the landscape of the West Garo Hills town.
