Shillong, Sep 25: Meghalaya took three more bronze medals yesterday on what was the last day of the 37th East Zone Junior Athletics Championship 2026 in Patna.
Yiarmanwill Rymbai, Melibad Kro and Anuska Majhong (pictured left to right) added their names to the list of Meghalaya medallists from the three-day championship.
Yiarmanwill was third in the U-20 men’s 200m race with a time of 22.92 seconds, Melibad third in the U-20 women’s shot put with a throw of 9.86 metres and Anuska third in the U-20 women’s high jump with a leap of 1.51m.
Over the previous two days Meghalaya had won one gold, one silver and one bronze.
Two of these were by Tusame N Marak, who won a gold in the U-18 women’s high jump on Tuesday and a bronze the next day in the U-18 women’s javelin. Wankyrmen L Mawphlang took silver on the first day in the U-20 men’s 5000m race.
Altogether, Meghalaya finished with 1 gold, 1 silver and 4 bronze. The gold medal means that the state did better than last year even though there were fewer medals – last year Meghalaya bagged 5 silver and 6 bronze.
The Meghalaya Athletics Association said that it is “immensely proud” of all its athletes.
The state contingent head coach, Pleasantly Synnah, who is also Joint Secretary of the MAA, said that, other than the medallists, there were a few others who just missed out on a podium.
“Despite many of our athletes not having the opportunity to come to the capital city for specialised training before the championship, they have still displayed strong performances and remarkable determination,” Synnah said. “This is a clear indication that our athletes are not lacking in talent, ability or potential. What they need is greater opportunity, exposure, guidance and support to develop and reach their full potential.”
