Shillong, May 8: West Garo Hills and Marngar 11 won the women’s and men’s events respectively at the Farmers World Cup Final at Marngar Stadium, Ri-Bhoi, yesterday.
West Garo Hills defeated Marngar’s women’s team 1-0 before the Marngar men’s team defeated East Garo Hills 3-0 in the second title match.
The women’s final saw both sides launch strong attacks in the first half despite the playing conditions not being great as rain ensured that the pitch was slippery.However, in the second half, West Garo Hills managed to score a goal, which ultimately proved to be the match decider.
In the men’s category, it was a tough match between East Garo Hills and Marngar 11 as both were gunning for glory. In the initial stages, Marngar launched massive attacks, which the East Garo Hills defenders managed to thwart. However, the hosts converted a free-kick into the first goal of the game and then found another soon after to make it 2-0 going into the second half.
EGH tried to find their way back in the second half but pressing high left them vulnerable to counterattacks and Marngar scored a third goal against the run of play to win the men’s title convincingly.
